PROVIDENCE, RI - Last week, I posted a link about the fact that I was looking for bands (musicians, and producers) for a gig I picked up as Music Supervisor for a film. I also posted the information on my Facebook page and told some key people in my “network.” Fast forward to this week and my inbox is still receiving updates from talented folks while the director has told me that I have more than enough music. That, my friend, is the power of Networking and Connecting. And that, my friend, is the theme of this week’s Take 5.

As I shared during a presentation in May, anyone can network. ‘Yes, utilize Facebook, Linked In, and stuff, but it really does not end there. Network at events and if you’re shy, find the other uncomfortable people in the room, and commiserate about how uncomfortable you are.’

For those in the area, I have two networking events I’m helping to organize that you might be interested in. One is with the organization the Rhode Island Young Professionals, while the other will feature female musicians, poets, and hip hop emcees. But you don’t only have to connect through events. For example, YWCA Northern Rhode Island offers you the opportunity to link to a friend by nominating her for a Women of Achievement Award. And on Saturday, from 9-11 AM, you can connect back with the Rhode 2 Africa project when one of the featured artists joins me on my Venus Sings radio show on WRIU. For those wanting to share history and culture with diverse audiences, check out the link from RI Council for the Humanities, because you may qualify for a grant to do just that.

Sunshine and laughter,
Reza Rites

It’s another Venus Sings weekend on WRIU’s Voices of Women, and I’ve got another special treat!

KINGSTON, RI - Listeners of my WRIU radio show who have heard the delicate and melodious “Deixa A Capella,” by Pawtucket, RI-based singer-songwriter, Michelle Cruz - take note! Cruz is back at it with a new single that is slow, steamy, and as bluesy as a starry night.

For your chance to hear it, tune in to Venus Sings Radio (on Voices of Women) this Saturday, August 29 from 9-11 AM (EST), on 90.3 FM or streaming live at www.wriu.org. Cruz, who was a featured artist in the Rhode 2 Africa Interview Series and Concert Series, will also be in the studio for a live interview and for your calls. You don’t want to miss it!

For more information about all the shows at WRIU, visit www.wriu.org. For more information on Venus Sings Radio, visit www.VenusSings.com. For more on Michelle Cruz, visit www.michellecruz.com.

Take 5 with Reza Rites - August 21, 2009

Greetings, friend,
I know and recognize that times are tough right now for milions around this country and maybe even you, but I also have to acknowledge the array of opportunities that are out there. For young professionals, displaced workers and even seasoned experts, there are nooks and crannies being created to help you climb and excel; if you are a visual or performing artist, there are programs and organizations ready to engage you; and for those in a position to give back, there are many in need, many policies that need fixing, and many vehicles to do one or both.

It is true that racism, poverty, inequitable access, and personal demons create barriers for taking advantage of the items I noted above. But last Friday’s Take 5 update was about highlighting opportunities and ensuring access to information. To see more, visit RezaRitesRi.com, VenusSings.com, or UrbanHealthWatch.net.

PROVIDENCE, RI - The stakes have officially been raised in my adventures as a DJ, and I’m up for it! What am I referring to? I was recently asked to serve as music supervisor on a film project about the intersection of art and youth development in Providence. I’m especially interested in local and regional artists and independent acts representing anywhere, and, specifically, I’m looking for original music that falls within or around the following musical or cultural parameters:

- funk
- soul
- afrobeat
- afrolatino
- hip hop
- trip hop
- acid jazz

Do you want to submit your music for consideration? Email me at rezaclif@gmail.com or find me on twitter, Facebook, or Myspace (keywords: Reza Clifton, Reza Rites). Time is limited so be in touch ASAP.

KINGSTON, RI - What do musician-vocalists Esperanza Spalding, Michelle Laveaux, and Eva Cortes all have in common? Well for one, they all performed at 44 Heineken Jazzaldia, a jazz festival I recently attended in San Sebastian, Spain.

And two?

They will all be artists featured on the next Venus Sings edition of Voices of Women: this weekend, on Saturday, August 8, 2009 from 9-11 am EST on WRIU, 90.3 FM in and around Rhode Island and streaming online at www.wriu.org.

To read about my experiences with the three musicians and at the festival in general, click here. To see photos from San Sebastian and Madrid, Spain, click here. For more info on WRIU, visit www.wriu.org.

a RezaRitesRi update

PROVIDENCE, RI - For some time now, I have felt that it was time to make changes to the RezaRitesRi publishing schedule. With original work and updates to broadcast occasionally, I’m receiving enough information and resources to post announcements daily. To address these competing concerns, I have decided to introduce a new format for newsletters and regular posts: Take Five with Reza Rites.

My goal is to touch base with you at least once a week - with 5 announcements or key updates, 5 reasons to visit the site, and 5 minutes of something new (and hopefully improved).

Here, in the inaugural edition of this format, I share 5 posts that can be found here on RezaRitesRi.com or on my music site, VenusSings.com. Most of the links will direct you to posts about my recent trip to Spain, though I’ve also shared updates about projects such as the feature on Farmers Markets I did for WRNI - RI Public Radio, which you can read about below. I promise that Take 5 won’t just be about me, as I hope you’ll see in future posts. Thanks for your ideas, support, and encouragement, and for sticking around for the ride in general.
