“ZONED-IN”
You’re starting your teen years; two older brothers in prison, father at 15, close to being a high school drop-out and then an incredible journey starts. Over the course of nine years, director Daniela Zanzotto accompanies a young Black man, Daniel Nartey, on a path that takes him from an urban South Bronx public school to a serene Rhode Island Ivy league University and back again as he discovers himself and his life’s purpose. It is a compelling tale of survival, ambition, achievement, disillusionment, and ultimately a tempered sense of success and fulfillment.
DANIEL NARTEY, the film’s subject, will be in Providence to discuss the film and his personal journey from the Bronx to Brown University and back to the Bronx again (as a High School teacher).

Pictured here is the cover to the current issue of She Shines - the Summer Edition. I, Reza Rites, served as the Guest Editor for it. The topic is “Minority Health: Prevention and Wellness for the Soul.” To hear a podcast on the topic, click on the image above or here. To read the current issue, visit www.sheshines.org.
PROVIDENCE, RI - On Sunday April 20, 2008, I showed up as a guest on 95.5 WBRU, a radio station which broadcasts out of Providence. The station’s Sunday programming is well-known locally as the 360 Degree Black Experience in Sound. It was added to the rock station in the 1970’s, but since its inception, it’s been just as known for its music as it is its attention to community issues.
Check out the exchange about minority health between me, Reza Rites and recent Brown University graduates and former WBRU DJ’s Eleby Washington, aka Darkness, and Evan Hendon, aka 816. At the time of the interview, I was working as Guest Editor on the recently completed issue of She Shines Magazine. The theme was Minority Health: Prevention and Wellness for the Soul.
Click here to listen to the podcast.
You’ll notice that I mixed some reggae music into it; special thanks to reggae singers Mark Messam, Turbulence, and Lady Dubb and Stereophonic Productions for providing the worldly tunes. To read the current issue of She Shines, visit www.sheshines.org or click here to download the entire issue. For more information about the music, visit www.stereophonicworldmusic.com and www.myspace.com/ladydubb80. For more information about health issues in RI, visit www.health.ri.gov.

The RI Young Professionals, Providence Black Repertory Company and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. seek sponsors to join the 2nd Annual All-White Affair: A Summer Eleganza at Waterplace Restaurant on July 10, 2008.
Providence, RI - The Rhode Island Young Professionals (RIYP), an auxiliary of the Urban League of Rhode Island, in partnership with Providence Black Repertory Company and Mu Theta Lambda Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host its second annual All-White Affair: A Summer Eleganza on Thursday, July 10, 2008 from 7 PM - 12 AM. The event is part of Black Rep’s genre-defying music festival, Sound Session 08. As a fundraiser and the only Sound Session event offering an upscale networking dinner and gala for business leaders, community champions, and up and coming professionals, the Eleganza will be held at Waterplace, a Pinelli Marra Restaurant and Lounge.
Drawing from the charm and beauty of Caribbean, Pacific, and other Island cultures, Eleganza guests will be draped in all white attire, enjoying a carefully selected dinner prepared by Waterplace, Downcity Providence’s premiere Restaurant and Lounge. With a Jazz Reception at 7:00 PM and dinner served at 8, the latter part of the evening will be devoted to dancing and entertainment provided by surprise guests, live performers and Providence’s best DJ’s.
“Our first All White Affair was a huge success last year thanks to sponsors like Nappa Building Corporation, Rhode Island Hospital, Detroit Collision, and South Street Café. We are thrilled to re-partner with the Alphas and Black Rep to bring back a widely talked-about event during a widely talked-about music festival,” said Raymond Watson, president of RIYP. “We’re bringing back the best of last year, plus adding special twists like the new location. In their island-inspired whites overlooking the Providence River, with music, refreshments and spirits all night long, guests will truly be treated to a night of ‘decadence and elegance’ at our Summer Eleganza and at Sound Session 08.”

Greetings,
I just want to apologize to everyone who tried tuning in to WRIU this weekend to hear me on “Voices of Women.” The college-run radio station experienced transmitter issues off and on the entire weekend, including during my scheduled appearance. If I have your cell phone number, though, you do know that the station temporarily came back on on Saturday a little before 11:00. Therefore I joined the Bladeconnex Show for about 30 minutes. That show airs from 11 AM - 2:15 PM. I played a set from about 2:00 - 2:15.
Do you want to start receiving messages on your cell phone? Join the newsletter see above) or the yahoo group (see below) to drop me a line letting me know!
Sunshine and laughter,
Reza Rites
